The UK Cost of Living Crisis and Food Security Project
This is an ongoing research project exploring how the UK Government can respond to food price shocks through effective emergency food policy.
The project combines a scoping literature review, expert interviews and policy analysis to develop evidence-based recommendations that strengthen food security and resilience in the UK.
Project overview
The UK has experienced a sustained cost of living crisis since 2021, with rising food prices placing increasing pressure on households across the country. As part of Verdant’s programme of research into housing, energy and food, this project examines how governments can respond to food price shocks through effective emergency intervention.
The research focuses on food security and resilience in the UK, reviewing both contemporary policies implemented in middle and high income countries and historical approaches to managing food price shocks, including wartime rationing. Alongside a comprehensive review of the existing literature, the project will incorporate expert interviews to identify practical, evidence-based solutions for policymakers.
